Even tho The Texas Chainsaw Massacre is mostly technologically fictional, the story that served as an inspiration for the movie is based on a real-life murderer!

If you already watched the movie, you know already that the story. It’s about a group of friends that gets lost in the middle of nowhere and gets preyed on by a family of cannibals.

So, was there a Leatherface in real life?

The story was marketed as being a true story, but the truth is that it was just inspired by true events.

The movie was inspired by a real-life murderer and “body snatcher” Ed Gain, also known as “the Butcher of Plainfield”. Gain was known for digging up and stealing corpses from graves and making mementos out if their bones and skin.

This obviously served as an inspiration to the scene in the movie where one of the characters finds a room full of furniture made of deceased human body parts.

Gain was later found guilty of murdering a hardware store owner named Bernice Worden in 1968 and was institutionalized as insane.

When police investigated his house, they found the decapitated body of the victim and all kinds of horrifying objects like face masks made of human skin.

This probably served as an inspiration behind the facts that Leatherface wears a mask made of human skin in The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.
